On June 26, 1945, the United Nations Charter was signed in the Veterans Building's Herbst Theatre by the group of 50 founding nations, following the two-month-long United Nations conference in the Opera House. Opera, symphony, modern and classical dance, theatre, recitals, plays, lectures, meetings, receptions, special screenings, and gala events all have a place and occur at the Center. The 23–24 Season charts a new era for San Francisco Ballet, with powerful world premieres and beloved classic works that will be seen in San Francisco for the first time. The theater space is dominated by a massive aluminum and glass panel chandelier under a blue vault, and the proscenium arch is decorated with gilded figurative sculpture. The theater has 3,146 seats plus standing room for 200 behind the orchestra and balcony sections. The SF Ballet Box Office in the Opera House is open only on performance dates and opens for four hours prior to each performance.

In particular, there was a lack of office space and rehearsal space. In 1974, The Pointer Sisters were the first pop act to perform at the theatre.[1] In 1979 the backstage area was extended, followed in 1981 by the opening of a new wing built onto the house on the Franklin Street side. This gave spaces for sets, coaches, and dancers as well as more administrative space. At the same time, the nearby Zellerbach Rehearsal Hall, with a stage the same size as that of the Opera House, was opened as part of the complex which included the Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall. It is one of the largest performing arts centers in the United States. It covers 7.5 acres (3 hectares) in the Civic Center Historic District, and totals 7,500 seats among its venues. The artists who have performed on its stage are as legendary as the building itself. The theater hosts more than 60 performances of nine operas annually and for 85 years has been a vibrant enclave of arts, culture and creativity. During the years of Kurt Herbert Adler's general directorship, the inadequacies of the house became apparent as the season was expanded.

After opening its doors to audiences on October 15, 1932, the exquisite Opera House has been home to San Francisco Ballet since its earliest days. At the time of its construction, the stage complex was the largest and most technologically sophisticated in the United States—and its acoustics among the best in the world. If you do plan to drive, I recommend arriving a little earlier. I don't recommend parking in the street here as most spots are hard to come by. Make sure to not leave anything in your car during a performance either to avoid any issues with break-ins.
That being stated, you will want to plan ahead as they performances usually sell out and people plan for them well in advance of the shows. Something that I love about the War Memorial Opera House is that there is so many performances to see here with over sixty different performances of nine operas throughout the year. It's scheduled certain Mondays (except holidays and when there are performances on Monday nights) and leaves from 455 Franklin Street. Known for both classic and contemporary operas, it is always cutting edge and you can be sure to find something you'll love when you visit our beautiful city.
Civic Center Ambassadors wearing orange jackets will be leading a walking group to the Civic Center and UC Law SF (formerly UC Hastings) garages. They will be on the north side of the main entrance steps on Van Ness holding a sign. Walking groups leave 15 minutes after the conclusion of each performance. The musical values were in the well-routined hands of Roberto Abbado, conducting opera for the first time in America. He obviously knows the score and obviously understands the style (although one may argue with his decision to cut the “Sleale” duet). On this obviously trying occasion, however, he served primarily as competent accompanist.
Leona Mitchell, who undertook the challenge on Sunday, is not quite in the same league. Roberto Scandiuzzi, the Italian basso cantante making his U.S. opera debut as Padre Guardiano, served happy notice that the noble Neri-Pasero-Pinza-Siepi tradition may yet be alive and well. His dark yet slender tone rolled evenly from brilliant heights to resonant depths, and he commanded the stage, quietly, with well-focused, slightly bemused dignity. If you are coming from Union Square, I recommend picking up any Muni line and taking it to the Van Ness Station.
